I Don’t Smoke. Why Do I Need an Oral Cancer Screening?

At Young Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, our Centennial dentist performs an extensive examination on every new patient. Part of that exam is a cancer screening in areas inside and around the mouth, including the face and neck.

Oral ScreeningWhy is this so important?

Because oral cancer does not just affect the people who use tobacco or alcohol. Although these are risk factors, other not-so-popular red flags can also include sun exposure and certain viruses. As such, even very healthy individuals can unknowingly develop pathological diseases.

Early Diagnosis is Key

Unfortunately, oral cancer is a silent and deadly killer. Most people never realize that they have the disease until it is fairly advanced. You see, symptoms are often small and easy to overlook until they have spread deeper into the body and are more difficult to treat.

Diagnosing cancerous and precancerous tissue is the best way to prevent oral cancer deaths.

What are we looking for during your screening? Here are a few examples…

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Sores that never seem to heal, or continue to pop up over and over again
  • Areas that appear different than those around them or without a mirror image on the opposite side of the mouth
  • White, red, or raised areas of tissue which differ from the surrounding tissues

Should our dentist in Centennial feel that an area is suspicious or precancerous, we may order a biopsy. After the tissues are sent off to a lab, we can determine which steps to take next. It may be that you need to be referred to an oral surgeon or oncologist.

Oral cancer screenings SAVE LIVES. That’s why every patient, regardless of their age, receives one at Young Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. If you have a suspicious area that you want to have looked at, don’t put it off another day. Your family and loved ones will thank you for having it checked out…if anything, do it just to be safe.
